10:00 AM - 12:00 PMCNTDr. Loren (Larry) Rothstein – Saturday, April 5, 10:00 a.m.
In our Sanctuary and virtually on Facebook and YouTube.
Dr. Loren (Larry) Rothstein will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah (again) at Congregation Ner Tamid on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
“In the Old Testament, men lived to three score plus 10 years, or 70,” Larry said. “Somewhere along the line, men could have a second Bar Mitzvah at 83. I missed my second 10 years ago. But, this year my birthday (April 4) weekend coincides with the same Parsha (Vayikra) that I chanted 80 years ago. My children said ‘go for it’ and have a second Bar Mitzvah, so I'll be chanting the Haftorah and participating in both the Friday and Shabbat Morning Services.”
Larry was born in Minnesota on April 4, 1932, and earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1956. He trained afterward to be a radiologist and became a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology. He practiced at City of Hope in Duarte, CA, in Beverly Hills, CA (private practice), at Minneapolis General Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, and in Long Beach, CA (private practice). He retired in 1995.
After 30 years in Long Beach, Larry moved to Palm Desert, CA, and then to Las Vegas in 2006. He’s an avid tennis player.
Larry married his high school sweetheart Lilly Ann Freeman in 1951. They were married for “64 wonderful years,” when Lilly Ann passed away in 2016.
They had five children: Mark (Sue) of Henderson, NV, Debbie (Wes) of Northridge, CA, Brian (Kathy) of Maui, HI, Sheree (Hayes) of Williamsburg, VA, and Michele (John) of Henderson, NV.
Larry also has seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
“Lil and I were always interested in Judaism,” Larry said. “We almost always belonged to Temples and Synagogues and we both sang in Temple choirs. We even led Services in Long Beach when both the Rabbi and Cantor were away.”
In later years, the couple, Larry as the Rabbi and Lil as the Cantor, led Jewish Holiday Services aboard more than 50 cruise ship voyages.
Larry has also led Services at Sun City Aliante and now leads Shabbat Services monthly at Carnegie Heights.
“My Bar Mitzvah project is to continue to bring to my Jewish friends at Carnegie a chance to welcome the Sabbath as they did in the ‘old’ days,” Larry said.
Friends and family will gather at CNT to help celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Larry’s original Bar Mitzvah including children Mark, Debbie, Sheree, and Michele, and their spouses; his sister Shirley and her husband Dr. Freeman Rosenblum of Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Alia Rothstein and Sara Davenport with Juniper, of Las Vegas, NV, Torrey Rothstein with Jamie and Rhys of Woodside, CA, and Jarrod and Nicole Rothstein of Knoxville, TN; and, nieces and nephews Larry and Esther Freeman of Pine City, MN, Manson and Etta Lambright of St. Paul, MN, Michael and Lori Shannon of Corcoran, MN, Michael, Lisa, and Audrey Rothstein of San Marcos, CA, and Eric, Sarah and Jessica Kepschull of Las Vegas, NV.
